Our promise to our communities

Delta Dental is committed to serving the oral and overall health of our communities.
In a year as challenging and unpredictable as 2020, keeping this promise was more important than ever.

Advancing oral health

Oral health is critical to overall health. A healthy mouth is an important indicator of one's broader well-being, while poor oral health is linked to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other health challenges. Yet nearly 99 million Americans reported they did not have access to dental insurance in 2020.

In 2020, Delta Dental improved the oral health of millions of Americans through direct dental treatment in underserved communities; water fluoridation initiatives; and oral health education.

Responding
to COVID-19

In the first months of the pandemic, nearly 70% of America's dental offices temporarily closed — limiting short-term access to oral health care and threatening a longer-term crisis if local providers were forced to permanently shutter.

Delta Dental committed $1.1 billion in response, delivering loans to safety net dental clinics, enabling dental offices to acquire PPE, and supporting local safety nets like food banks.

Addressing inequities
and disparities

Racism is a serious public health crisis that negatively impacts oral and overall health outcomes for communities of color. Relative to peers, people of color experience higher rates of tooth decay and are less likely to access oral health care — unacceptable disparities.

In 2020, Delta Dental invested in leading racial justice organizations like the NAACP and the National Urban League; reached underserved communities of color with oral health programs; and supported scholarships and training for dentists of color.

Keeping our promise

Delta Dental companies and foundations invested more than $102.5 million in community impact initiatives in 2020, supporting over 2,400 programs, impacting 24.7 million lives, and volunteering 20,000 hours. We served communities in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
